What is the difference between a FOID card and a CCL in Illinois?
A FOID (Firearm Owner’s Identification) card allows you to own and purchase firearms and ammunition in Illinois. A CCL (Concealed Carry License) permits you to legally carry a loaded, concealed firearm in public. Both are required to legally conceal carry in Illinois and Chicago.

Can I carry a concealed weapon on the CTA or Metra?
No. It is illegal to carry firearms on public transportation in Chicago, including CTA buses and trains as well as Metra lines, even if you have a valid CCL.

Do I need a separate permit to carry in Chicago?
No additional permit is required beyond the Illinois CCL. Once licensed by the state, your permit is valid throughout Illinois—including Chicago—provided you follow local restrictions.

Where can’t I carry a concealed firearm in Chicago?
You cannot carry in schools, government buildings, public transit, correctional facilities, hospitals, and establishments with “No Firearms” signage. Violating these rules can result in fines or license suspension.

What are the penalties for violating Chicago’s concealed carry laws?
Penalties can include fines, license revocation, criminal charges, or permanent disqualification from future concealed carry licensing.

How long does it take to get a CCL after completing training?
The Illinois State Police typically process CCL applications in 90–120 days. Submitting fingerprints can shorten the wait to about 60–90 days.

Is concealed carry allowed in Chicago parks or on the lakefront?
In general, yes—unless the area is posted with “No Firearms” signs or falls under another restricted category. Always look for signage and review updated city ordinances.

Can I take concealed carry classes in Chicago if I’m not yet 21?
Yes. You can take the required training before your 21st birthday. While you can’t apply for your CCL until you’re 21, early training helps you meet eligibility quickly once you’re of age.

Do Chicago laws change more often than state laws?
Chicago can enforce stricter local rules on signage, transportation, and certain carry zones. While state law governs licensing, it’s important to stay informed about any updates specific to Cook County and the city of Chicago.
