What to Know Before You Renew Your Illinois Concealed Carry License
If you’re a concealed carry license holder in Illinois, staying compliant with renewal requirements isn’t just a matter of convenience—it’s the law. Your Illinois Concealed Carry License (CCL) is valid for five years, and if you let it expire, you’ll have to start from scratch with the full 16-hour training course. That means more time, more money, and more hassle.
Fortunately, the renewal process is much simpler—as long as you know what to expect. Whether you’re renewing for the first time or the third, here’s what you need to know before your CCL expires.
When to Start the Renewal Process
Illinois law allows you to begin renewing your CCL up to 120 days before the expiration date. We recommend marking your calendar and acting early—this helps you avoid delays and ensures your license remains valid without interruption.
If your CCL expires before you renew, you’ll lose your legal carry privileges immediately. Worse, the state will require you to complete the entire 16-hour training course again, even if your license has only lapsed for a short time. Early renewal is the best way to avoid unnecessary retraining and added expense.
Required Training: The 3-Hour Renewal Course
To renew your CCL, the State of Illinois mandates a 3-hour renewal course taught by a certified instructor. At Concealed Carry Safety for Personal Defense Inc. (CCSPD) in Niles, IL, we deliver this training in a straightforward, no-nonsense format that ensures you’re fully prepared.
Here’s what the 3-hour course includes:
-
Legal updates on state and federal firearm laws
-
Instruction on use of force and interaction with law enforcement
-
Review of prohibited areas and parking lot carry exceptions
-
A live-fire qualification, shooting 30 rounds (10 each from 5, 7, and 10 yards)
Our class costs $125, which includes range time, one target, and safety instruction. You can bring your own firearm and ammunition (30 rounds required), or use one of ours for an additional $10, which includes ammunition and preloaded magazines.
State Application and Fees
Once you’ve completed the renewal class, you’ll need to apply online through the Illinois State Police Firearms Services Bureau.
Here’s what to expect:
-
$150 renewal fee
-
$4 credit card processing fee
-
Payment is made directly on the ISP website during your application
If you’d like to speed up your processing time, optional fingerprinting is available (more on that in a moment). The total cost to renew your license typically ranges from $275 to $350, depending on whether you opt for fingerprinting or use CCSPD’s firearm during class.
What You’ll Need to Apply
To successfully renew your Illinois CCL, be sure you have the following items ready before starting your online application:
-
A valid FOID card
-
A digital, passport-style photo (head and shoulders, taken within the last 30 days)
-
Your Illinois State Police login credentials
-
Access to a desktop or laptop computer with a stable internet connection (avoid using mobile devices)
-
Your certificate of completion from a certified 3-hour renewal course
Pro tip: Save your certificate digitally so you can upload it easily during the application process.
Optional: Fingerprinting (Faster Processing)
While fingerprinting is not required, it can speed up your renewal approval significantly. With fingerprints on file, the Illinois State Police may process your application in as little as 90 days. Without fingerprints, processing can take up to 120 days.
Live-scan fingerprinting typically costs $55–65 and must be completed through an approved vendor. If speed is a priority, it’s worth the investment.
